The American Pit Bull

When the APBT arrived in the American is unknown, it is estimated in the late 1700's. His purpose was for "bull baiting" or "bear baiting" hence the name "bulldog" not breed specific but named for the job entrusted to do. These were the gladiators of dogs. Always looking for ways to better the sport these dogs were crossbred with terriers; making in essence a stronger, smaller, more agile fighting machine. As time went on these dogs were known by various names; Half & Half, Pit Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers, Yankee Terriers, and now the American Pit Bull Terrier.

APBT have always been known as a fierce dog but in the last 20 years the media has made them into a true monster, the Jack the Rippers of the dog world. Mauling everything from grannies to babies, no one was safe. If you were a breeder, owner, or just a fan of the APBT; you would have known over ½ of the reported incidents were not pit bulls at all. That however did not or does not deter the media in its quest for ratings. For every news story on a pit bull, thousands of attacks from other breeds do not make the spotlight.

Growing up I was more afraid of my mothers' miniature Schnauzer that bit everyone in our household and in the neighborhood, then my daughter's APBT. Yes, my 6 year old daughter. The dog she rides, sleeps with, pulls his tail, feeds him out of her plate, and the dog she lets drink water out of her mouth! Yuck! These two are not pet and master but brother and sister. APBT, this is the dog everyone is worried about? They're a great family dog, high tolerance for children, and loyal; a dog that would die pleasing or need be defending its family.
